Polisario Claims Self-Defense, Accuses Morocco of Ceasefire Violation

Brahim Ghali claims the right to resistance. In his missive addressed to António Guterres, he justifies the assault against Moroccan positions in Smara. According to the Europa Press agency, the official vigorously denounces the reactions of certain governments condemning this offensive. He criticizes "irresponsible and inaccurate" statements which, in his view, seek to mislead public opinion.

This diplomatic offensive comes as Spain and the United States now rely on resolution 2797, a text considering the Moroccan autonomy plan as a basis for negotiation. Facing this situation, Brahim Ghali accuses Morocco of violating the 1991 ceasefire on November 13, 2020 by "annexing an additional 40 square kilometers" and building a new sand wall at Guerguerat.

He also criticizes the "systematic use of lethal weapons and drones to assassinate" dozens of "innocent civilians". For him, the stability of North Africa depends exclusively on "self-determination", believing that lasting peace will never be achieved "by rewarding the occupying power".
