Poison Attack Kills 12 Dogs at Moroccan Animal Shelter in Agadir

In Agadir, 12 dogs were found dead from poisoning in an animal shelter after eating meat containing poison thrown into the yard of Morocco Animal Aid by a neighbor. The association had to relocate.

Several dogs were victims of a poison attack during the month of Ramadan. A neighbor threw suspected poisoned offal and intestines into the yard of the Moroccan Animal Aid (MAA) association, based in the Agadir region. In the absence of a veterinarian, the workers tried to revive the dogs. "We tried to evacuate the dogs’ stomachs ourselves with charcoal and olive oil, which is a natural remedy," said Lucy Austin, founder and president of MAA, to Daily Mail. They pumped their stomachs to extract meat covered in blue poison that "burned the eyes" of the rescuers. Unfortunately, nine of the dogs did not survive. Three other dogs died later.

"We found intestines and offal hanging in the trees of the back fence of one of our neighbors’ houses," said Lucy Austin. "We think the poison had been thrown into our yard and some got stuck in the trees and the dogs had obviously gone to eat it right away in the morning because it was chicken." The association reported the attack to the Agadir police. But "nothing happened... agents came to the shelter and took my statement and that’s it, we never heard from them again," lamented the association’s president.

After this poison attack, MAA had to leave Agadir to settle in a more rural area without neighbors.
