Philosopher Luc Ferry Advocates Balanced Approach to Teaching Freedom of Expression

Philosopher and politician Luc Ferry has joined the debate raging in France since the assassination of teacher Samuel Paty. According to the former minister, if he were to teach freedom of expression, he would show caricatures "of Jesus, Moses and Muhammad" as well, without insults, without lacking in modesty.
"We don’t have to, to teach freedom of expression, show caricatures that are on the verge of pornography," reacts Luc Ferry on franceinfo. "If I had to do a class on caricatures and freedom of expression today in a senior class, I would start possibly with Louis Philippe, transformed into a pear. That caused a scandal at the time," he adds.
Luc Ferry thinks that there are more than just caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad to illustrate the course on freedom of expression. "I would show the caricatures, possibly those of Charlie, but which depict Jesus, Moses and Muhammad as well. But we don’t have to show caricatures that are on the verge of pornography and that are still abominable," he insists. "We don’t have to insult people to defend freedom of expression," the same source specifies.
