Paris Grand Mosque Opposes Assisted Dying Bill as French Parliament Debates

The Grand Mosque of Paris expresses its opposition to a proposed law establishing a right to assisted dying, which will be put to a vote in the National Assembly on May 27.

Will euthanasia soon be a reality in France? On Saturday, deputies adopted, with 75 votes against 41, a key article of a proposed law aimed at creating a right to "assisted dying." The text notably provides that the lethal substance be self-administered by the person concerned, except in cases of physical impossibility. It will be submitted for a global vote in the National Assembly on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

In the meantime, the text is facing opposition. In a statement, the Grand Mosque of Paris opposes any legalization of euthanasia or assisted suicide. According to the religious body, this proposed law is contrary to the fundamental values of respect for life. If the text is adopted, France will become "one of the most permissive countries in the world regarding assisted dying," it warns.

Its adoption "would threaten the most vulnerable and call into question the fundamental respect for all human life," adds the same source. The institution led by Chems-Eddine Hafiz then calls for the need to "together affirm our attachment to the dignity of every human being." It emphasizes that "palliative care, capable of easing acute pain or suffering related to loneliness and abandonment, is a true help until the last breath."

To support its position, the Grand Mosque of Paris cites a Quranic text, calling not to end life. "Do not kill the life that Allah has made sacred, except in justice," the statement further reads.
