Notorious Belgian Bank Robber Captured at Mauritanian Border After Guinea Prison Escape

Escaped from the prison in Conakry, Guinea a month ago, the Belgian-Moroccan bank robber Ibrahim Akhlal, 27, was arrested at the border of Mauritania with Morocco. Belgium is demanding his extradition.
Akhlal, who was the subject of an international arrest warrant, was arrested by the local Guinean authorities on July 14 at the border of Mauritania with Morocco, the federal police confirm to Het Laatste Nieuws. The Dutch justice system suspects the Belgian criminal of Moroccan origin of having participated in the theft of gold bars worth 12 million euros in Amsterdam in May 2021. He is also accused of four other violent thefts for which he risks a sentence of 21 years in prison.
The dangerous criminal had managed to escape from the Saint-Gilles prison in Belgium in March 2020, before being located and arrested at the end of 2022 in Guinea by the FAST team. At the beginning of June, he managed to escape again, with the complicity of prison guards and nurses from this prison. The Belgian authorities will initiate the procedures for his extradition, announced the federal police.
