Nahel’s Mother Leads Protest in Nanterre Against Officer’s Release, Demanding Justice

The mother of Nahel Merzouk, the 17-year-old killed by a police officer during a traffic stop in June in Nanterre, organized a protest march on Sunday against the provisional release of the police officer and to demand justice for the death of her son.
Hundreds of people gathered on Sunday on the Place Nelson Mandela in Nanterre, where the young man was killed, to denounce the release of the police officer presumed to be the author of the shot and to demand justice. The demonstration took place peacefully, although some protesters threw objects at the police.
Mounia, Nahel’s mother, is the initiator of this demonstration, which was attended by victims of police violence as well as left-wing activists and mothers who fear that their children may suffer the same sad fate as Nahel. The protesters were outraged at the release of Nahel’s killer police officer.
"We don’t understand his release. It’s a bad sign for the young people. We no longer feel at ease when we pass in front of the police," said Nadia Essa, a Moroccan from Nanterre, also the mother of a 17-year-old young man. The slogan "Justice for Nahel" was widely chanted during the demonstration, which was supervised by the police.
To recall, Internet users had denounced the fundraising campaign launched by far-right groups to support the police officer, which had raised 1.6 million euros.
