Muslim Leaders Urge High Voter Turnout for French Legislative Elections

The Council of Mosques of the Rhône (CMR) invites Muslims to massively go to the polls for the legislative elections that will take place on the Sundays of June 12 and 19.

Two months ago, the CMR called on Muslims in France to "participate in the life of the Nation" by going out to vote to elect the President of the Republic. The Council is renewing its call for the legislative elections.

This election is "part of the continuity of the democratic process initiated last April. In this regard, it is obviously not a question of being indifferent to it. On the contrary, it is a matter of supporting and amplifying this movement to designate those who will bring to the National Assembly the aspirations of the French people and vote for the laws that will impact our daily lives," stresses the CMR.

For the mosques of the Rhône, there is no question of remaining on the sidelines of such an event. "At a time when simplifications, manipulations and intellectual and media shortcuts on Islam have become widespread, voting has become a mandatory civic act and an imperative duty for Muslim citizens. Muslim citizens no longer have the right to leave to others the possibility of thinking for them and/or deciding for them," declares the body, for whom "the very difficult conditions that our country is going through require a high sense of discernment, increased responsibility and individual commitment of all citizens in the service of the general interest."
