Muslim Group Opposes Early Reopening of Mosques for Eid al-Fitr Celebrations

The Rassemblement des musulmans de France (RMF), chaired by Anouar Kbibech, opposed the resumption of religious celebrations as early as May 24, on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, as proposed by the Grand Mosque of Paris if the June 2 schedule is not maintained.

Absent from the office of the French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM), the Fédération nationale des musulmans de France does not approve either of this resumption of worship announced for May 29.

According to the RMF, the vast majority of Muslims in France consider that the conditions would not be fully met for the celebration of religious ceremonies as early as May 24 or May 29, based on the various scientific opinions to which the government’s opinions refer. The risks of endangering the health of the faithful and contributing to a possible resurgence of the pandemic would not be negligible," the RMF specified.

According to the same source, French citizens of the Muslim faith can legitimately claim to be "treated equitably with regard to the different faiths, and in particular the Muslim faith" as to the choice of the date of May 29. To this end, they must reject any form of competition between the different faiths.

Furthermore, the federation "solemnly invites the leaders of Muslim places of worship in France to actively prepare their plan for the gradual reopening of prayer rooms, in compliance with the rules of social distancing and barrier gestures, in order to be ready when the time comes, to welcome the faithful under the best possible conditions of health security".
