Morocco Unveils Plan to Revitalize Textile Industry Amid Global Market Shifts

The Moroccan textile industry is one of the sectors hit hard by the health crisis related to the coronavirus raging in the kingdom and in the European countries, the main outlets for Moroccan exports. The Moroccan Association of Textile and Clothing Industry (AMITH) has developed a new vision to adapt the Moroccan offer to the new international sourcing map.

The strong dependence on traditional mainly European markets and the import of a large part of the raw materials have appeared as two constraints that currently limit the competitiveness of the Moroccan textile and clothing industry, reports La Vie éco. According to industrialists, the current health crisis has thus confirmed the vulnerability of the sector compared to its foreign competitors. Based on these findings, AMITH first carried out a diagnosis of the sector, then developed a new sectoral vision articulated around four axes. These are strengthening the sector’s ability to adapt to the needs of its customers, innovation and creativity, sustainability and finally the consolidation of the offer through technical expertise and traceability of inputs.

Addressing the first component, Fatima Zahra Alaoui, Managing Director of AMITH, explained that "the sector must strengthen its level of adaptation to customer requirements, its anticipation capacities, as well as the quality of its logistics services". A measure that will allow this industry to adapt to the changes made, following the health crisis, in the global sourcing map. According to the association, foreign customers have decided to reduce their dependence on Asian countries, with a view to local sourcing. An opportunity that the Moroccan textile industry can seize.

The second axis related to innovation with the introduction of technology in the industrial process, creativity and digitalization "will involve an integrated "Made In Morocco" offer with an excellent quality-price ratio", specifies Ms. Alaoui. As for the third axis, it is a question of highlighting the proposal of solutions meeting the requirements of the Sustainable Development Goals, with a view to eco-responsible production requiring traceability of inputs and in line with the expectations of customers. As for the last axis, particular emphasis will be placed on consolidating the quality of the offer through greater technical expertise.
