Morocco Unveils Direct Fuel Subsidies for Transport Sector Amid Price Surge

In response to the demands of transporters, the government has taken a series of measures, in connection with the rise in fuel prices.
The strike by transporters last week put pressure on the government, which has just decided to revise its policy in the sector.
At the end of a meeting held on Monday, the two parties found an agreement to deal with the rise in diesel prices. Thus, a direct subsidy will be allocated to professional transporters, to mitigate the effects and limit the impact on transport rates and commodity prices.
In this context, the executive plans to make available to transporters a digital platform allowing them to benefit from this exceptional subsidy, until prices return to their normal level. "This platform will allow the government to subsidize professional diesel directly," explained Abdelghani Berrada, secretary general of the General Federation of Road and Port Transporters.
In parallel, an interministerial commission will be responsible for drawing up the lists of the transporters concerned. These professional subsidies "will vary according to the categories of transporters" and should start in two weeks, while a new meeting is scheduled for next week, added the official.
The details of the deployment of this plan, and the examination of other urgent issues will be on the agenda of an upcoming meeting, he specified.
