Morocco: Undercover agents to trap dishonest taxis
The hunt for unscrupulous drivers is open in the six host cities of the Africa Cup. The authorities have deployed a radical control system: undercover agents now pose as ordinary customers to assess the quality of the service from the inside and immediately sanction any infractions.
This "mystery shopper" method aims to concretely verify the behavior of professionals on the ground. The agents are tasked with hailing taxis, getting in, and analyzing the condition of the vehicle as well as the driver’s attitude. Any negative report can lead to immediate administrative decisions, exposing offenders to the immobilization of their vehicle and, above all, the permanent revocation of their trust card.
This security offensive is accompanied by a massive awareness campaign. The wilayas and prefectures have distributed formal notices to small and large taxi drivers, reminding them of their obligations towards national and foreign customers. The objective is to impose an exemplary image of the profession before the influx of African supporters.
This tightening of controls is a direct response to recent media scandals. The viral dissemination of videos by foreign influencers, denouncing cases of extortion or refusal of service in Marrakech, has pushed the administration to react firmly to prevent these practices from tarnishing the Kingdom’s reputation during the continental event.
