Morocco’s Tourism Plummets 45% Amid Global Health Crisis

The global health crisis has strongly impacted all the vital sectors of the country. Tourism, the main lever of the Moroccan economy, has experienced an unprecedented 45% drop over the past 4 months.
During a parliamentary session held on Monday, the Minister of Tourism, Nadia Fettah Alaoui, presented the indicators of the tourism sector in Morocco with the advent of the coronavirus pandemic. They recorded a sharp decline in the first four months of 2020, with a significant reduction in the number of tourists, which stands at 45% compared to the same period last year. As for overnight stays, they show a drop of nearly 43% against 15% for tourism revenues during the same period.
Faced with this critical situation, Morocco has decided to change its approach. Unlike previous years, the kingdom is committed to developing domestic tourism. For the government member, the new plan focuses on preserving the employment, skills and capacities of industry professionals, promoting its takeoff, and setting up a quality offer meeting the needs of tourists.
According to her, her department wants to make domestic tourism one of its priorities to boost the sector, through the revision of the offer and its adaptation to the demand of local tourists, the launch of an intense promotional campaign to restore confidence, without forgetting the promotion of the local product.
