Morocco’s Tourism Industry Struggles to Recover, Major Destinations at 15% Capacity

The tourism sector in Morocco is struggling to resume its activities after the health crisis. The recovery is very timid in Marrakech and Agadir, the main tourist cities of the kingdom, which are operating at only 14 to 15% of their accommodation capacity.
Tourism professionals are desperate in the face of a timid resumption of activities. The situation is likely to worsen, according to Les Inspirations ÉCO, which indicates that the uncertainty is total if one sticks "to the closures and reopenings of establishments, while nearly 50% of the bed capacity is no longer operational in Marrakech and 25% in Agadir, leading to a resurgence of social conflicts". The newspaper fears an acceleration of the pace of closures by the end of this month, particularly for establishments operating with the German and English markets.

In search of solutions to this situation, the National Federation of the Hotel Industry plans to hold a videoconference meeting of its bodies this Tuesday "to discuss the collective and urgent actions to be taken during this period, marked by a total lack of visibility". The fate of the grievances submitted by the National Confederation of Tourism (CNT) to the supervisory ministry will be discussed on this occasion. "Pending the government’s feedback, professionals are in a state of expectation, while the minister has already informed them of her commitment to accelerate the implementation of emergency measures in favor of the tourism sector, as soon as possible," it is specified.

"With the exception of the French market which can save the day, the situation is worrying for the other markets, which puts Moroccan professionals in a very complicated position, especially with the situation in Europe which is not about to improve," analyzes the daily, recalling that more than 229,000 tourists are expected in Agadir this November, thanks to a three-year partnership between the ONMT and Ryanair.
