Morocco Tightens Ramadan Curfew Enforcement as COVID-19 Concerns Persist

The Moroccan government attaches importance to compliance with the curfew imposed during the month of Ramadan and other health measures enacted to curb the spread of the coronavirus and its variants in the kingdom. The security services have received firm instructions.
The police and the Royal Gendarmerie have been instructed to enforce the measures taken within the framework of the extended health emergency state until May 10 and the night curfew during the month of Ramadan, reports Al Massae. Already, the security services are deployed on the ground this weekend. They are strengthening checkpoints at the entrances and exits of cities. Citizens’ movements will thus be controlled. They are required to have an exceptional travel authorization.
The managers of bus stations and the drivers of large taxis and coaches have received the same instructions. They too must enforce the health restrictions. Mobilized, the police officers will come to their aid. Any person who would go to another city in the kingdom without having the exceptional travel authorization will be fined.
The government has taken these strong measures to avoid a repeat of the situation of 2020. Morocco was facing a surge in coronavirus cases in the aftermath of Eid al-Adha. Controlling the epidemiological situation would shield the kingdom from a third wave of Covid-19.
