Morocco Tightens Olive Oil Quality Controls to Combat Fraud

Faced with fraud on the quality of olive oil, the Moroccan authorities have decided to strengthen controls to guarantee the food safety of consumers.
These controls initiated by the services of the National Office of Sanitary Safety of Food Products (ONSSA) will consist, in a first step, in verifying the compliance with hygiene and food safety requirements, traceability and self-checks at the level of the establishments authorized by the Office, explained Khadija Arif, head of the plant products control department.
In parallel, "an enhanced control of the olive oils marketed in the various sales outlets has been carried out within the framework of the joint prefectural commissions, and this to fight against the sale of adulterated olive oils, of unknown origin or unfit for consumption."
In addition, consumers are invited to buy packaged, labeled olive oils from establishments approved by the Office.
