Morocco to Subsidize Food Prices Ahead of Ramadan Amid Rising Costs

To mitigate the effects of rising prices, the Moroccan government plans to subsidize certain products. A dialogue has been opened with professionals in this regard.
Speaking at the end of the Council of Government, which met on Thursday, spokesman Mustapha Baitas assured that the executive is making great efforts to mitigate the effects of the surge in prices of certain consumer products on citizens, especially during the post-Covid-19 period and as the month of Ramadan approaches.
In this context, the government is closely monitoring this issue and attaches great importance to it. The issue was on the agenda of discussions during the first cycle of social dialogue with the representative trade unions, he specified, adding that the rise in fuel prices on international markets has been examined, especially since the price of a barrel has reached $120.
In addition, the monitoring operations in the wake of support for the supply situation of the market and prices have identified several violations. Thus, 1,436 offenses were recorded as part of the control operations carried out at 45,069 points of sale, he said, according to whom 10 offenses were the subject of reports transmitted to the competent public prosecutors.
The spokesman also noted the "incomprehensible" rise in the prices of a number of basic necessities, in addition to freight prices, which have increased by 600% to 700%, and the scarcity of raw materials.
