Morocco Slips to 96th Place in Global Prosperity Index, Ranks 10th in MENA Region

Morocco has lost two places in the 2020 prosperity country ranking. The Kingdom occupies the 96th place out of the 167 countries analyzed, with an overall score of 54.9.
In this ranking, Morocco has lost 2 places compared to last year, but gains 4 places compared to 2010. This is an initiative of the Legatum Institute, an independent think tank based in London. Several criteria are taken into account in this ranking, such as health, education, social capital, investor protection, education, government integrity and air pollution, etc.
At the MENA regional level, the kingdom ranks 10th out of 19 countries, a decline of 4 places compared to 2010. Regarding market access and infrastructure compared to 2010, Morocco has made a remarkable advance, progressing 13 places globally. Regarding its investment environment, it has gained 13 places since 2010 and ranks 65th. As for the progress made in business conditions, the country has gained 34 places and ranks 61st globally.
The report states that Morocco has progressed 13 places globally in terms of market access and infrastructure compared to 2010, due to the significant improvement of its infrastructure, particularly its competitive mobile telephony market, which has improved access to high-quality internet. It has also progressed 19 places since 2010, to 65th place, for its investment environment, following major reforms strengthening intellectual property rights and investor rights.
Most of the progress has been made in business conditions, up 34 places to 61st globally, mainly due to the reduction in the time companies spend complying with regulations, according to the note on Morocco. On the other hand, the level of social capital has deteriorated significantly, relegating the country to 164th place on the basis of this criterion. While the scores for governance and the natural environment have declined, the health sector has stagnated compared to 2010.
