Morocco Shifts Focus to Domestic Demand and African Markets Amid Global Crisis

With the global health crisis that has led to the shutdown of European and Asian industries, Morocco should prioritize domestic demand. In this regard, it will be necessary to encourage the improvement of the quality of its products to achieve this feat.
Measures must be taken to encourage the consumption of Made in Morocco, reports l’Économiste. To achieve this, sub-Saharan Africa, and particularly West Africa, should represent a major outlet for Moroccan products.
While large companies have acquired market shares in this part of Africa, Moroccan textile-clothing (around 2%) and agri-food products are struggling to establish themselves. As for Moroccan exports to this region, they represent less than 0.5% of its total imports. For now, only the banking sector, the pharmaceutical industry, construction, energy... have been able to develop in Africa.
According to the same media, the revitalization of Morocco’s former global trades focused on efficient SMEs, benefiting from effective support, would allow them to acquire significant market shares, partly thanks to the establishment of partnerships with local companies. The other trick that could greatly contribute to the success of this dynamic is the presence of the main Moroccan banks in sub-Saharan Africa.
For the record, Southern Europe holds potential for Made in Morocco. The United Kingdom, following Brexit, would also present opportunities for Moroccan companies. Thus, Morocco could finally constitute a bridge between Europe and Africa, or even between China and Africa, a commercial and/or industrial hub, thanks to a real economic diplomacy, foresees the same source.
