Morocco Seizes Nearly 11 Billion Dirhams in Anti-Money Laundering Crackdown

Morocco is effectively fighting against money laundering and terrorist financing. In total, nearly 11 billion dirhams were seized in 2022.
The measures taken by the Moroccan public authorities in the fight against money laundering have proven their effectiveness. During the presentation, on Friday, December 30, of a guide on the techniques of research and investigation of money laundering and terrorist financing offenses, it was announced that 10.972 billion dirhams have been seized since the beginning of 2022, reports the Arabic daily Assabah. As for the number of cases handled, it has increased from 55 in 2018 to 850 in 2022. As for convictions for money laundering, the number stands at 138 in 2022 against 10 during the entire 2008-2018 period.
These results reassure the stakeholders - in particular the presidency of the public prosecutor’s office - in the fight against money laundering, who intend to maintain the positive trend of these various indicators and the effectiveness of the judicial system. The scientific guide on the techniques of research and investigation of money laundering and terrorist financing offenses will be very useful. This document provides criminal justice practitioners with the national and international legal framework for the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing, but it also presents the description of the criminal investigation process in this type of crime in accordance with the requirements of the FATF, international standards and agreements, and Security Council resolutions.
