Morocco Sees 5% Growth in Bank Accounts, Women’s Ownership Rises Sharply
The number of bank accounts held by individuals increased by 5%, or 28 million, in 2019, compared to 4.7% in 2018. These are data published by Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM) in its annual report on banking supervision for the year 2019.
According to the report, this rate is 44% for women and 79% for men, compared to 40% and 77% respectively in 2018. This shows a clear improvement in the bank account ownership rate for women. As for the breakdown by age group, the document indicates that 28% of people aged 16 to 25 have a bank account, compared to 24% in 2018.
Bank Al-Maghrib also reports that the accounts opened by participatory banks have increased from 56,000 to 87,000 accounts at the end of 2019. As for bank cards, they have increased by 7.3% and are mainly used for withdrawal operations.
The annual report on banking supervision is a document that traces, among other things, "the main achievements and actions taken in terms of banking regulation, micro-prudential supervision and protection of the clientele of credit institutions".
