Morocco Rejects Fuel Subsidies, Citing $10 Billion Price Tag

Insistently demanded by transport unions, due to the rise in pump prices, subsidizing fuel would cost the state 100 billion DH, according to the government spokesman.
Mustapha Baitas returned to the subject again during the press briefing following the government council held on Thursday, categorically stating that the government does not have the capacity to subsidize fuel prices.
According to the official, "it would take 100 billion DH to carry out such an operation. This is the equivalent of the government budget allocated to the health and education sectors for next year."
Regarding the cost of energy, the minister recalled that the executive has taken urgent measures to maintain electricity prices at the same level, despite the significant increase in its cost. As for essential commodities, the government has allocated 22 billion DH to support the price of the gas cylinder and 8.5 billion DH to support the price of bread, he stressed.
