Morocco Poised to Benefit from French Import Reshoring, Study Finds

Import relocations in France could be beneficial for Morocco. This is the conclusion of a meeting co-organized by Tanger Med Special Agency and ASMEX.

During this meeting, export players presented their different views on the opportunities that Morocco can seize in the context of the international reconfiguration of the value chain, reports L’initiative international.

"58 categories of activities across the 4 categories we have studied - health & pharmaceuticals, agri-food, electronics, process and assembly industries - represent 115 billion euros in imports. We estimate that relocating just 20% of this potential in France should create 75,000 direct jobs and more than 200,000 indirect jobs," explained Jonathan Le Henry, Strategy & PWC director, also keynote speaker.

According to him, it is clear that France will not be able to accommodate all of this production infrastructure. He believes that part of this relocation could be placed in Morocco. To meet the challenge, Mr. Le Henry indicates the way forward. The kingdom will have to be very competitive and strengthen its industry.

"If this effort is made, it will benefit locally but will also allow the country to get out of it with better competitiveness and a better positioning on international markets. Morocco’s ability to maintain its market share will come from its ability to improve its competitiveness in a competitive context," he specified.

For his part, Hassan Sentissi, president of ASMEX and guest of honor at this conference, emphasized the need for Moroccan export players to integrate information systems to harmonize and pool all the means made available by partners in favor of Moroccan foreign trade.
