Morocco Maintains 30-Year Price Freeze on Butane Gas Despite Global Surge

Despite the economic situation, Morocco has overcome the rise in the price of basic necessities. For example, the price of butane gas has not seen any major change since 1990, according to the Minister in charge of the Budget, Fouzi Lekjaâ.
When questioned on the subject, the minister said that for several years, the state has always subsidized the price of gas. "You should know that butane gas is a compensated product," he recalled, specifying that for 30 years, its price has been maintained at 3.33 dirhams per kilogram.
Recalling the price of butane gas internationally, which has increased by 60%, the minister explained that in Morocco, the real price of a 12 kg gas bottle is 130 dirhams, "which means that the state subsidizes each bottle by 90 dirhams".
This year, this measure has been strengthened, as evidenced by the 2022 Finance Act, which has provided for a global credit of nearly 16.02 billion dirhams to subsidize the prices of butane gas and food products, an increase of 28% compared to last year.
