Morocco Launches Large-Scale COVID-19 Testing in Schools to Track Variants

30,000 middle and high school students have been selected in six regions of Morocco for an operation to screen for SARS-CoV-2 infection. According to the Minister of Health, this is an operation aimed at assessing the level of virus circulation among young people under 18 and genetically characterizing the circulating variants.
All regional health directors have been informed of this operation through a circular from the supervisory ministry. It specifies that this initiative is part of the national plan for monitoring and responding to SARS-CoV-2 infection and following the appearance of new variants of this virus. The regions targeted by this operation are Casablanca-Settat, Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, Tanger-Tétouan-Al Houceima, Fès-Meknès, Marrakech-Safi and Souss-Massa, reports the MAP.
This operation will be carried out in close collaboration with the Ministry of National Education. Given its importance, the Ministry of Health calls for the collection and forwarding of samples to the designated laboratories, in accordance with the procedures that will be communicated by the Directorate of Epidemiology and Disease Control, the same source specifies.
