Morocco’s Job Market Shifts: Urban Growth Offsets Rural Losses as Unemployment Edges Up

The Moroccan economy generated 262,000 jobs in urban areas and lost 119,000 in rural areas between the 3rd quarter of 2018 and the 3rd quarter of 2019, for a net creation of 143,000 jobs, announced the High Commission for Planning (HCP) in its latest Information Note on the labor market.
According to this note, the services sector was the source of the largest number of job creations, with 336,000 jobs generated in the 3rd quarter of 2019, followed by construction with 37,000, while "agriculture, forestry and fishing" lost 204,000, and industry (including crafts) shed 26,000 more.
As for unemployment, the HCP reports that the national level reached 1,114,000 people, the equivalent of a slight increase in its rate, according to the HCP.
It specifies, however, that more than half of the unemployed are looking for their first job, two-thirds are long-term unemployed and more than a quarter found themselves in this situation following dismissal or the cessation of the employer’s activity.
