Morocco-Israel Ties Spark Protests as Activists Decry ’Military Alliance’

Nearly three years later, many Moroccans continue to display their opposition to the normalization of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel. Sion Assidon, a human rights activist, believes that this rapprochement has become "a military alliance".
"For years, we have been fighting against normalization, this normalization that has become a military alliance, and we say that it is impossible for the Moroccan people to accept that Morocco makes a military alliance with the occupiers of Palestine," denounced Sion Assidon during a demonstration that brought together activists and supporters of the Palestinian cause on Friday in front of the Moroccan Parliament in Rabat.
In unison, the protesters condemned the intervention of the Israeli police in the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. "Today, with this new right-wing fascist government, the Palestinian people are facing a very great danger. These people dream of driving the Palestinians out, of continuing this uninterrupted nakba (catastrophe) since 1948, by amplifying it, by driving the Palestinians out of Jerusalem and by building more and more settlements," said Sion Assidon.

On Wednesday, Morocco, whose King Mohammed VI chairs the Al Quds Committee, reacted to this intervention by the Israeli police in the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad strongly condemned the act and denounced "the aggression and terror of the faithful in the middle of the holy month of Ramadan." Morocco also stressed "the need to respect the legal, religious and historical status of Al Quds (Jerusalem) and the Holy Sites and to avoid all practices and violations that could destroy all chances of peace in the region."
