Morocco Invests $1 Billion in Massive Urban Bus Fleet Expansion Across 32 Cities

Morocco will mobilize 10 billion dirhams to acquire a fleet of 3,500 urban transport buses for the benefit of 32 cities over the period 2024-2029, announced on Monday Abdelouafi Laftit, Minister of the Interior.
Responding to a question on "the modernization of the urban mobility and public transport system" in the House of Representatives, Abdelouafi Laftit specified that these funds will be used to strengthen the current fleet, maintenance centers, bus depots and parking lots, and ticketing and management assistance systems.
Thus, studies have been carried out regarding the delegated management of bus transport, said the minister, specifying that these investments will be borne by his department and the groupings of local authorities and regions, in order to ensure the sustainability of this service.
Also, a new model of delegated management contracts and a specifications defining for the delegated authorities the type of buses to be acquired and the contract award procedure, with a preference for locally manufactured buses, will be developed. All measures will be taken to improve services and ensure budgetary balance, Laftit added.
