Morocco Introduces Drone Technology to Enhance Power Grid Monitoring

The National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) will soon be equipped with an automated inspection platform for electricity transmission lines, based on the use of drones and image processing.
The project was the subject of a specific agreement signed with the Foundation for Research, Development and Innovation in Science and Engineering (FRDISI), ONEE said in a statement.
This agreement is part of a global partnership between FRDISI and ONEE which promotes the strengthening of expertise, applied research and innovation as well as the development of training.
Actions are underway and concern the design and realization of a mobile drone imaging platform, an image processing system collected from a drone as well as an automated intelligent distributed platform for the inspection of transmission lines by exploiting aerial vectors, the office said.
This project, it is said, promises significant improvements in operating performance, including improved personnel safety, reduced line downtime, automated diagnostic operations and optimized costs and timelines. Scientific publications as well as the filing of a patent with the Moroccan Office of Industrial and Commercial Property by the two partners have been planned.
In this context, ONEE and FRDISI are seizing the opportunity of the development of the ecosystem to encourage innovation on a national scale to initiate the necessary steps for the industrialization of this project.
