Morocco’s Honey Production Rises to 7,500 Tons, Falls Short of National Target

Moroccan honey production increased last year, reaching 7,500 tons, but far from the 16,000 tons expected under the Green Morocco plan.
Responding to a question in parliament on the "disappearance of bee colonies", Mustapha Baitas indicated that the year 2021 was mixed for the honey harvest, while stressing that this sector represents many employment opportunities.
Recently, the National Office of Sanitary Safety of Food Products (ONSSA) noted a phenomenon of colony collapse in several regions of Morocco and the subject was put on the table of the House of Advisors on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development and Forests.
In addition to the 130 million dirhams released to help beekeepers, Baitas highlighted the efforts made to address this issue. He recalled that 23,000 hives were visited, inspected and monitored in several regions of Morocco. Laboratory analyzes concluded that no disease had affected the bees.
He specified that the Ministry of Agriculture pays particular attention to this issue, as beekeeping contributes to national production but also to the tourism dynamic in certain regions.
