Morocco’s Gas Imports Surge as Spain Reopens Maghreb-Europe Pipeline

Spain agreed last June to reopen the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline (GME) in the reverse direction, closed by Algeria since the end of October 2021, to allow Morocco to import gas. Six months after the start of this agreement, the quantities of gas transported to Rabat have increased significantly.
Over the past two months, the quantities of gas sent to Morocco via the GME have quintupled, reaching 553 GWh and 527 GWh respectively in November and December, compared to 60 and 172 GWh in June and July, at the start of the operation and 328 GWh in October. During these six months, Spain has sent a total of 1,882 GWh of gas to Morocco, nearly 60% of which in the last two months, according to Enagás data.
