Morocco’s Football Revolution: From World Cup Sensation to Youth Triumph
After reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 Qatar World Cup and securing a historic victory by winning the U20 World Cup in Chile, two months before hosting the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Morocco is forging a solid reputation in the world of football.
Moroccan football is constantly progressing. In 2022, the Moroccan A team reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar, becoming the first African and Arab selection to reach this level. Nearly three years later, it is the Moroccan U20 team that amazes the entire African continent by winning the World Cup in Chile for the first time in its history after defeating Argentina (2-0). An exploit that the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) is proud of: "The triumph of the Young Atlas Lions is no surprise, it is the result of years of investment and planning." The FRMF has built one of the most ambitious youth development systems in Africa. Morocco thus becomes the first Arab nation to win a U-20 World Cup, and only the second African team to achieve this feat after Ghana in 2009.
In the eyes of many experts, the crowning of the Atlas Cubs is not an isolated peak, but part of a global national project. For beIN Sports, Morocco’s progress is not the result of chance. "The country has massively invested in sports academies, infrastructure and technologies, following models inspired by European powers. Result? Morocco no longer plays to surprise, but to win," comments the media. And to continue: "Morocco is proof that with planning, infrastructure and a long-term vision, a nation can transform its football destiny."
Qualified for the 2026 World Cup, the Moroccan senior team has only one goal: to become the first African country to win a World Cup. "Our goal is not just to participate, but to compete to win," said Walid Regragui, coach of the Atlas Lions, after the U-20 triumph. Meanwhile, Morocco is focusing on the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) that it is hosting from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026 for the second time after the 1988 edition. Its wish is to (re)become African champion, after the only AFCON won in 1976.
