Morocco’s Economic Landscape: Casablanca-Settat Leads GDP Contribution, Regional Disparities Persist

The analysis of the regional accounts for the year 2019 revealed that the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima (TTA) region has maintained its place among the leading regions of growth, with a growth rate higher than the national average.
According to the note from the High Commission for Planning, the economy has always created more disparities between the regions. This reality is confirmed by the contribution rates to GDP published in the document, reports the MAP.
Thus, the Casablanca-Settat region is at the top of the major contributors to GDP, as it alone creates 31.8% of the national wealth, followed by the Rabat - Salé-Kénitra region, which occupies the second position with a share of 15.3% of the national GDP, while the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima region is far from the median position.
Regarding the TTA region, the HCP noted that it recorded an economic growth rate of 3.8%, exceeding the national rate by 1.2 points. Thus, 15.6% of the growth in national GDP is to the credit of the region since its contribution to national growth is 0.4 points, the note explains, noting that regional disparities continue to widen in relation to this criterion.
Regarding the leading sectors in this region, the note specifies that four sectors of activity are the most overrepresented in the TTA region, namely "manufacturing industries" and "trade", which come first with respective contributions of 16.6% and 14.2% to the national value added related to the same sectors.
This is followed by the "electricity and water production and distribution" sectors with a weight of 12.6%, then "education, health and social action" with 11.8% and "Real estate, rental and services to businesses" with 11.9%. The TTA region ranks 5th among the most populous Moroccan regions, housing 10.5% of the national population, the same source points out.
