Morocco Considers Vertical Graves to Address Cemetery Overcrowding Crisis

Morocco is facing a problem of cemetery saturation in Casablanca and other major cities. During the oral question session last Monday, Ahmed Taoufiq, Minister of Habous and Islamic Affairs, proposed the implementation of vertical graves as a solution.

The deputies of the Party of Authenticity and Modernity (PAM) questioned the Minister of Habous and Islamic Affairs about the saturation of cemeteries in the major cities of the kingdom, reports Al Ahdath Al Maghribia. Before the House of Representatives, Ahmed Taoufiq indicated that the development and organization of cemeteries did not fall under the jurisdiction of his department, but rather under that of the municipalities. His department works to preserve the sanctity of the graves after burial.

In the past, the Ministry of Habous had, exceptionally, developed new cemeteries. In total, 33 hectares had been set aside between 2008 and 2018 to house new burial spaces. According to the minister, the problems plaguing the sector are mainly related to a legal void. He also said that the annual deficit in burial spaces is estimated between 80 and 100 hectares.

To solve this problem, Ahmed Taoufiq advocates the implementation of vertical graves. A proposal that does not receive the approval of Moroccans. For their part, the PAM deputies call for a "Fatwa" authorizing the reopening of cemeteries closed for at least 40 years, for the burial of new deceased.
