Morocco Considers Banning Watermelon Farming Amid Water Crisis

Local associations in the province of Al Haouz have asked Rachid Benchikhi, the governor of the province, to ban the cultivation of watermelons and melons.
This request is motivated by the scarcity of rainfall in the region, and the fact that the cultivation of melons and watermelons requires a large amount of water.
In addition, Yahdih Bouchaab, Wali of the Drâa-Tafilalet region and the province of Errachidia, has recently taken a measure to better manage the use of irrigation water.
Thus, due to a water shortage in the Drâa-Tafilalet region, exacerbated by several years of drought and lack of rainfall, he has decided to ban the cultivation of watermelons in the province of Errachidia.
This decision aims to preserve the region’s water resources, particularly the groundwater, and to ensure more sustainable water management.
