Morocco Child Marriage Claims Spark Outrage on Social Media

The publication of an image showing alleged Moroccan girls in wedding dresses held by the hand by older men has gone viral on social media. Some claim that this happened in Morocco. What is the reality?

Published by an Internet user on January 1 on Twitter, the photo of children in wedding dresses with the caption: "Morocco legalizes marriage between men and girls. Minister Mustafa Ramid justified that marriages between men and minors are for the good of the girls. Open your eyes, that’s why we see cases of pedophilia. He wants to legalize it. And the feminazis?", has set the web on fire.

Has this photo really been taken in Morocco, where child marriage would be legalized? Internet users have fact-checked. Some have discovered that it was taken in Palestine in 2012, while others have cited the dates on which the law criminalizing child marriage was enacted in Morocco. In 2004, the Family Code set the marriageable age at 18 years. Previously, the legal age was 15 years.

In view of the verification by Internet users, the publication of the Twitter user is therefore fake news.
