Morocco’s Cereal Production Plummets 67% in 2021-2022 Season, Ministry Reports

The 2021/2022 agricultural season ended with a cereal production of 34 million quintals, compared to 103.2 million quintals obtained a year earlier, a decrease of 67%, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
This production comes from a cereal area of 3.6 million hectares, compared to 4.35 million hectares in the previous season, the department specifies in a press release, adding that by species, cereal production is distributed as follows: on soft wheat, 18.9 million quintals, durum wheat, 8.1 million quintals and barley, 7 million quintals.
Two regions, Fès-Meknès and Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, accounted for 58% of production, the note details, stressing that irrigated cereals contributed only 20.7% of total production. "This is due to the decrease in the irrigated area of cereals and the restrictions on irrigation in the large hydraulic perimeters," it explains.
It should be recalled that the 2021/22 season was marked by rainfall that reached 199 mm at the end of May 2022, down 44% compared to the 30-year average (355 mm) and a 34% decrease compared to the previous season (303 mm) at the same date.
