Morocco’s Central Bank Destroys 310 Million Banknotes Amid Currency Circulation Shift

The volume of issuance by Bank Al-Maghrib in 2018 far exceeds that of the destruction of banknotes in 2017, according to the Central Bank’s Report on Financial Market Infrastructures.
In total, a volume of 518 million notes was issued in 2018, representing an increase of 14% compared to 2017. And a volume of 310 million notes was destroyed, a decrease of 18%.
As for the quality maintenance, carried out jointly by BAM and the Private Sorting Centers (CPT), it reached a volume of 3.1 billion notes, an increase of 5% compared to 2017.
Thanks to the CPT processing, 1.64 billion valid recycled notes were directly returned to banks and 434 million valid notes were deposited with BAM. And the recycling rate is around 79%.
By denomination, the 200 DH and 100 DH banknotes achieved recycling rates of 86% and 79% respectively, the BAM report states. Conversely, the 50 DH and 20 DH banknotes recorded low recycling rates (24% and 14% respectively).
