Morocco to Build Five New Dams in 2021, Boosting Water Capacity by 525 Million Cubic Meters

Morocco will welcome five new dams in 2021, with a capacity of 525 million m³ for an estimated total cost of 4.8 billion. These projects are part of the national water plan (PNE 2020-2050), launched in January and which is an extension of the priority water program approved by King Mohammed VI.
The construction of these dams should be launched in 2021. This plan concerns, among other things, the dams on Oued Lakhdar, in the province of Azilal, the dams of Taghzirt, in the province of Béni-Mellal, Tamri in the prefecture of Agadir Ida-Outanane and Alkhankro in Figuig, in addition to the Imfout dam, in Settat, which is to be raised. Once these works are completed, the total capacity of the dams will be increased to 27 billion m³, it is specified.
During the period 2009-2020, 23 large dams had been built for an investment of 28.2 billion dirhams, in order to bring the capacity to 6.237 billion m³ thanks to seven dams in operation and 11 under construction.
