Morocco Braces for Potential COVID-19 Surge Following Eid Al-Adha Travel

The Moroccan authorities fear a resurgence of Covid-19 cases after Eid Al-Adha. Citizens who had traveled to other cities in the country to celebrate the religious holiday with their families are currently returning home.
The authorities’ fears are justified, as many citizens had joined the eight cities banned from access due to the rapid spread of the coronavirus without a travel authorization. In addition, the number of confirmed cases increased during the three days of the holiday. In total, 2,798 people tested positive, including 1,063 on the day of Eid alone.
Elements of the Royal Gendarmerie even intercepted a truck transporting 34 sheep sellers, at the entrance of Zaouïat Cheikh coming from Tetouan, on the day of Eid Al-Adha, reports Assabah. The driver did not have the exceptional travel authorization. All passengers were tested for Covid-19. Five of them tested positive. They were admitted to the Beni Mellal hospital. Isolated, the other passengers will undergo a new screening.
Realizing the epidemiological situation, the gendarmerie and police services have already set up several checkpoints at the entrances to cities. Similarly, preventive measures are about to be strengthened.
