Morocco’s Béni Mellal-Khénifra Region Hits Record 700,000-Ton Sugar Beet Harvest

The Béni Mellal-Khénifra region produced some 700,000 tons of sugar beet for the current agricultural season. This performance bodes well for Morocco.
The spectacular development of the sugar beet sector positions the Béni Mellal-Khénifra region at the forefront. The 700,000 tons result in a yield of 70 tons per hectare, informs the regional agricultural department, which foresees revenues of around 850 million dirhams.
The sugar beet sector occupies a predominant place in the regional economic fabric. It offers about 3 million working days and guarantees permanent employment for about thirty companies.
These encouraging results are explained by the synergy of action between the actors in the sector. A program contract has been established by the Ministry of Agriculture for the benefit of all the actors in the sector to facilitate localized irrigation, mechanization of the technical process of the beet sector and the digitization of all data related to agriculture in the region.
Already 10,000 Ha corresponding to 80% of the development program of this sector at the regional level have been cultivated. The head of the sugar beet sector in the Béni Mellal-Khénifra region, Kamal Mohamed, recalled that the first results announce an exceptional beet season.
