Morocco’s Bee Population Decline Linked to Environmental Factors, Not Disease

The regional director of the National Office of Food Safety (ONSSA) of Béni-Mellal-Khénifra, Mohamed Nemmaoui, assured, based on laboratory analyzes carried out on the hives in the region, that the flight of bees is not related to any disease.
The disappearance of bees is due to several environmental, climatic, biological factors and especially to good beekeeping practices, said Nemmaoui in a statement to M24, also mentioning the weakness of rainfall, the decrease in the quantity and quality of food available for bees, the health status of apiaries and the prevention methods followed.
After the analyzes carried out in the laboratory by the services of ONSSA and its partners, including the Moroccan interprofessional federation of beekeepers, it appears that the bee colonies have not been decimated by any disease. It is rather the "Colony Collapse Disorder", a phenomenon more known in some countries in Europe, America and Africa.
ONSSA continues its efforts to identify the real causes of this still new phenomenon, assures Nemmaoui, specifying that the visits carried out on about 23,000 hives by the provincial veterinary services, have made it possible to realize the extent of this unprecedented phenomenon in the kingdom.
