Morocco Becomes Third-Largest Non-EU Importer of French Soft Wheat in May

Last month, Morocco imported 146,000 tons of soft wheat from France, making it one of the main non-European Union (EU) customers of the country.

These data compiled and published by the British Argus, a specialist in sector reports, show that Morocco ranks third among France’s non-EU customers, behind Egypt (239,230 tons) and Algeria (184,940 tons).

Even though no exports were recorded to China in May, this country remains the largest importer of French wheat since the start of the 2021-2022 marketing campaign, with 1.9 million tons imported. It is followed by Algeria (1.6 million tons) and Morocco (1.38 million).

Furthermore, French exports, excluding the EU, of soft wheat reached the highest level since the 2016-2017 campaign, with a combined total of 7.17 million tons for the period July 2021-May 2022, compared to 7.33 million tons estimated by the European Commission.

For the current campaign, France’s export estimates are 9.25 million tons of soft wheat to non-EU countries, according to the national agency for agriculture and marine products FranceAgriMer. In June, France must export at least 2.08 million tons of wheat, a volume never reached in the last 20 years.
