Morocco-Algeria Gas Pipeline: Spain Seeks Trump’s Support to Reopen the GME

According to government sources cited by the Spanish press, Madrid perceives a favorable change in the atmosphere. Spain is counting on the influence of the new American administration to promote regional agreements. The objective is to obtain the resumption of operations of this infrastructure that connects the Algerian gas fields to Spain by crossing Moroccan territory.

The issue is strategic for Europe. With the ban on Russian gas imports planned by the European Union from 2027, the reopening of the GME would provide crucial supply security. It would also allow for increased gas exports to France and the rest of the continent.

So far, Algiers has rejected all European requests. Relations between Spain and Algeria have deteriorated following Pedro Sánchez’s support for the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara. This position has led to a breakdown in trade relations, with the exception of gas deliveries via the Medgaz pipeline, which directly connects the two countries via Almería.

Currently, the GME section is used in reverse flow. It allows Spain to send gas to Morocco to meet the Kingdom’s energy needs. Rabat ensures that this gas is acquired on international markets in the form of LNG, although some sources indicate that a portion of this liquefied gas could come from Russia.
