Morocco’s Alcohol and Tobacco Taxes Yield $195 Million Despite Pandemic

The domestic consumption tax (TIC) on alcohol and tobacco generated 1.95 billion DH for the state accounts, despite the health crisis.
According to L’Économiste, consumption revenues, particularly alcoholic beverages, have not been impacted by the health crisis due to the coronavirus. They have seen an increase against a decline in the consumption of soft drinks and juices.
On the customs side, the daily newspaper reports a similar situation with TIC revenues also seeing an increase. As for VAT on imports, it has declined sharply (49 billion dirhams in 2020 compared to 56 billion in 2019). This decline is justified by the 16% drop in imports due to the decline in the energy bill, resulting in a loss of 2.5 billion dirhams.
In addition, the TIC revenues paid to the budget also saw a decline of 2.5 billion dirhams to 27.4 billion due to the drop in the TIC on petroleum products.
