Morocco’s Aging Population Surges: HCP Report Reveals 12.2% Over 60

The High Commission for Planning (HCP) has published the 2023 edition of Morocco’s social indicators. It emerges that the aging of the population is an undeniable reality.
According to the HCP indications, people aged 60 and over represented 12.2% of the population in 2022. Longevity is higher among women, especially in urban areas, it is specified. As for life expectancy at birth, it is estimated at 76.8 years in 2022 (78.6 years for women versus 75.2 years for men, i.e. a gap of 3.4 years).

What about the age pyramid in 2022? The HCP notes a decrease in the share of children due to the decline in fertility over the past three decades. The age structure of the population in 2022 shows that the share of children is 25.2%, the HCP points out, stressing that the dependency and aging ratios are slightly higher, especially among rural women. As for the demographic dependency rate*, it has risen to 60% in 2022.
Demographic dependency rate: the ratio of the number of individuals presumed to "depend" on others for their daily lives - young and elderly - and the number of individuals capable of assuming this burden.
