Morocco 2026 World Cup: New Era Under Mohamed Ouahbi
On the eve of the 2026 World Cup in North America, Morocco is displaying very high ambitions. Ranked eighth in the world, the Atlas Lions are entering a new era under the leadership of Mohamed Ouahbi.
Like before the Qatar epic, an unexpected change of coach has disrupted Morocco’s preparation. Walid Regragui was dismissed in March in favor of Mohamed Ouahbi. With seventeen years of experience at Anderlecht’s academy and crowned with a world title with the under-20s in Chile last year, this former Brussels teacher brings a resolutely pedagogical approach.

On the pitch, he favors a 4-2-3-1 formation, adaptable to 4-2-2-2, designed to free up spaces for captain Achraf Hakimi on the right flank. This tactical signature immediately proved itself during the friendly matches in March, resulting in a draw against Ecuador (1-1) and a victory against Paraguay (2-1).
This rapid transition should help the squad digest a recent continental psychodrama. Last January, the Africa Cup of Nations final against Senegal descended into utter confusion. After a provisional withdrawal by Senegalese players to contest a penalty, ultimately missed by Brahim Díaz, Morocco lost 1-0. Although the African Confederation reassigned the title to the Moroccans two months later, Senegal appealed.
According to The Guardian’s analysis, this affair leaves deep scars. Fully aware of the pressure surrounding the team, Mohamed Ouahbi confides: "We all experienced trauma as Moroccans. This final was a difficult moment, but I believe the most important thing is continuity."
To win over the American public, the coach will rely on a core of seasoned players. Winner of the Champions League 2025 and 2026 with PSG, Achraf Hakimi remains the undisputed superstar of the country, despite an upcoming trial for rape accusations which he vehemently denies. Alongside him, the unflappable Noussair Mazraoui, versatile with Manchester United, takes on the role of true defensive leader. The midfield also benefits from the emergence of Neil El Aynaoui, who has become essential to AS Roma.

This very attractive team now hopes to commune with its large diaspora. With approximately 30,000 Moroccan nationals settled around New York and Massachusetts, North American stadiums promise to be boiling hot, provided that the record ticket prices imposed by FIFA do not discourage supporters.
