Moroccans Lead in Acquiring Belgian Citizenship, New Data Shows

Moroccans living abroad (MREs) top the ranking of citizens who have obtained Belgian nationality.
In total, nearly 70,000 citizens have acquired Belgian nationality since the beginning of 2018. In detail, Belgium has nearly 34,000 new Belgians in the first 10 months of 2019, 36,215 in 2018, according to statistics provided by Statbel and the National Register of the Institutions and Populations Service of the FPS Interior.
These new Belgians come from Europe (38.8%), Africa (32.9%) and Asia (17.4%).
Morocco occupies the first place in the top 10, with 9,046 since the beginning of 2018, ahead of Romanians (4,236), Poles (2,961) and Italians (2,664). They are followed by the British (2,448) and the Congolese (2,276). The Afghans (2,233) and the Dutch (2,188) close the podium.
