Moroccan Woman's Husband Sentenced for Domestic Violence in France

The Coutances criminal court sentenced the husband of a Moroccan woman for domestic violence resulting in two days of work stoppage.

Four months of suspended detention with a two-year probationary period including addiction treatment. This is the sentence imposed on the husband of a Moroccan woman residing in Brécey by the Coutances criminal court. He also received a course on domestic violence awareness.

The facts took place on the morning of June 10, 2022. According to the plaintiff’s account, it all started with an accusation she made against the man she married in Morocco in 2020: turning the music volume up very loud to wake her up. An accusation that her husband did not appreciate. He grabs her by the neck and tries to strangle her by pinning her against a wall several times, reports La Manche Libre. Then he slaps her. Her husband believes that he "feeds her" and that she "has nothing to say," the victim confides. In the process, his sister comes to her rescue.

The next day, accompanied by her sister and sister-in-law, the victim files a complaint for violence against her husband at the local gendarmerie. A medical examination reveals a contusion to the left eye, bruises to the chest, low morale and sleep disturbances. These acts of violence consequently resulted in two days of work stoppage. During the investigation, the defendant "totally denies the violence described by his wife," but changes his version at the trial. At the bar, he admits to having "given her a slap," but only after receiving one from the victim, who was blaming him for having "had an aperitif" outside.
