In Italy, the family of Maria Mercedes Huayamave Moran, a 50-year-old Ecuadorian woman fatally struck by a truck in May 2023, has been awarded one million euros in compensation. The driver, a 46-year-old Moroccan man, was convicted of road homicide and failure to render assistance, the Italian news agency ANSA reported on October 29.

The accident happened on May 10, 2023, in the Cornigliano district of Genoa. That morning, the driver was behind the wheel of a truck stuck in a line of vehicles on Via Cornigliano. When traffic started moving again, he set off without seeing a woman crossing at a crosswalk with another person.

Maria Mercedes Huayamave Moran was crushed by the truck and died at the scene. Investigations revealed several traffic violations.

According to Ivan Marinangeli, a representative of Giesse, the company assisting the victim’s relatives, the driver had exceeded the maximum permitted driving hours. His truck was also travelling on a road closed to heavy goods vehicles between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.—the exact time of the accident.

He leaves the scene without rendering assistance

The driver’s conduct after the accident was also held against him. According to Giesse, the man got out of his vehicle and then walked away without calling emergency services, while the victim was still beneath the truck.

The driver was tried under Italy’s expedited criminal procedure and convicted of road homicide and failure to render assistance. His driver’s licence was revoked.
