Moroccan Telecom Giant Fined $636 Million for Market Dominance Abuse

The Casablanca Commercial Court of Appeal has confirmed the conviction of Maroc Telecom for abuse of dominant position. The historic operator will have to pay 6.4 billion dirhams in compensation to its competitor Wana Corporate, formerly Inwi.
This decision, which follows an initial judgment by the Rabat Commercial Court in January, is now enforceable. Wana Corporate can therefore initiate procedures to compel Maroc Telecom to pay this huge sum.
Maroc Telecom is accused of having exploited its dominant position on the market to stifle its rivals. The law considers that a company is in a dominant position when it holds a significantly larger market share than its main competitor. This is precisely the case of Maroc Telecom, which has taken advantage of its historical presence to hinder, according to the courts, the development of Wana Corporate.
